FACIAL TRAUMA

Patients involved in falls, assaults, workplace injuries, sporting injuries or road traffic collisions often suffer facial injuries affecting the soft tissues, the teeth and the bones of the face including:

  • Maxilla (Top jaw)
  • Mandible (Bottom jaw)
  • TMJ (Jaw Joint)
  • Zygomatic Bones (Cheek Bones)
  • Orbital Floor and Wall (Eye Sockets)
  • Nasal Bones and Skull
  • Dento-Alveolar Trauma (Teeth and supporting Bone)

These complex injuries require accurate and prompt assessment by an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon who specialises in facial injury. This is to ensure the correct diagnosis and the subsequent treatment of all aspects of the injury.

In the setting of complex pan-facial fractures (complete facial skeleton) only specialist surgeons with the appropriate training in Maxillofacial Surgery can adequately plan and co-ordinate treatment in order to return a persons face back to both a normal appearance and function; in certain instances this requires working closely with other specialists, such as eye surgeons and neurosurgeons.

Secondary Correction of Facial Trauma:

Many patients receive less than ideal treatment of bony facial injuries in the first instance. In these situations, secondary correction of trauma-related deformity including scar revision through to corrective bone surgery may be indicated to help address problems with:

  • Facial appearance
  • Vision
  • Chewing
